STANDISH — Standish-Sterling's girls’ basketball team bounced back from its Friday loss to Ogemaw Heights with a solid defensive effort Tuesday in a 47-33 defeat of Gladwin.

The Panthers held Gladwin to 20 points through the first three quarters in building a 20-point lead.

"Ashlee Johnson scored 17 points against us last time (in a 61-52 SSC victory on Feb. 3), and Melanie Smalley had 14," said SSC coach Kevin King. "We really wanted to focus on taking them out of the picture, and the girls did a nice job of doing that."

Johnson and Smalley combined for just seven points — all on free throws — as the Panthers controlled the game almost from the outset.

Ashley Ford and Meredith Rosin each scored eight points for Gladwin.

Abbye Gulvas paced the Panthers (10-7) with 10 points, with Ashlyn Gulvas and Paige Raes adding seven each and Christina Proulx scoring six.

The Panthers, winners of 10 of 13 games since starting the year 0-4, host John Glenn on Friday.
