Standish, Omer post offices’ final pickup times to be earlier
ARENAC COUNTY — The deadline for outgoing mail at the U.S. Post Office in Standish will be 25 minutes earlier, and 20 minutes earlier in Omer starting Oct. 29.
Standish Postmaster Paula Lynch said the final pickup time will be pushed up to 4:05 p.m. from 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, because only one truck will be picking up mail daily, rather than two.
Omer Postmaster Todd Forshee said final pickup will be 3:55 in Omer once the change is implemented, rather than 4:15 p.m., as it currently is.
Lynch said the change is due in part because mail is no longer being sorted in Saginaw.
“Our mail is driven to Saginaw, and then it is taken off one truck and driven to Pontiac,” she said. “Nothing is sorted in Saginaw anymore.”
Lynch said the post office has been contacting local businesses about the change.
“We’ve been talking to all our businesses and courthouses and everything, because it’s not going out that day if it’s after 4:05 p.m.,” she said.
“Anything that anybody throws in there after is going to sit in there overnight,” Lynch added.
Forshee said the change was posted at the Omer post office.
“We did have informational sheets in the lobby on that,” he said. “The hour change will be reflected on the drop boxes as well.”
Despite the final pickup time being earlier, the post offices will not close earlier.
“Basically our window’s still going to be open until 4:45 p.m., and anything we take in won’t be on the truck.” she said.
“We’re still at the same hours we’ve had in the past. We’re open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the sales windows close from noon to 1 p.m.,” Forshee added.
Postmasters and officers in charge at the Alger, Sterling and Au Gres post offices said the final pickup times at those respective locations will not change. Final pickup is at 4 p.m. in Sterling and Alger, and at 4:30 p.m. in Au Gres.
