BAY CITY — The Standish-Sterling girls basketball team beat John Glenn Thursday night, 61-35.
“We came out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead,” said coach Kevin King. “We had five different girls score. I think this was a very typical game for us. It was a total team effort.”
The win brings SSC’s record to 10-2 on the season, 4-1 in conference play.
The top scorer for SSC was Christina Proulx with 17. Abbye Gulvas had nine points, while Brooke Bartlett and Kelsye Mielke both scored 8 points. King said nine out of 10 players scored in the contest.
King said the girls scored pretty evenly throughout the night, with 16 points in the first and third quarters, 17 in the second, and 12 in the third. He said the only part of play that he thought really needed any improvement was in the free throw department.
“We were 12 out of 24 on the line,” King said. “That’s pretty uncharacteristic of us.”
He said SSC generally averages around 68 percent on the free throw line, so Thursday’s performance was a little low.
“A lot of that was in the third quarter though, where everyone was kind of on cruise control,” King said. “Overall, I’m very pleased.”
SSC next takes on Bay City Central on Tuesday. King said the last time the girls saw Bay City, they beat them over break, keeping them scoreless in the first quarter. But, he said, the girls must still play well despite the prior victory.
“We can’t assume things come Tuesday,” King said.
