Standish businesses to welcome children during Kids’ Day

STANDISH — Standish youngsters will have an opportunity to participate in the Christmas season on Saturday, Dec. 12.

Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day, the Standish Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Kids’ Day, a time when Chamber businesses host children and their parents and conduct activities for the children. The Arenac County Independent is one of the local businesses scheduled to play a role in the event, along with Pamida, Little Joe’s, Pleasantries, and the Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center.

When the children need to take a break from the activities at the businesses in town, they will get to talk to the big man – Santa Claus – and tell him their Christmas wishes. Santa will be visiting the American Legion Post #104 in Standish from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the day’s attractions.

Chamber Vice President Ruth Caldwell said at each of the participating businesses, children will be invited to “make it and take it,” as they create an item of their own to take home. She said children will be allowed to make cookies and create their own Christmas cards at some of the local businesses.

While at the Independent office, children are invited to write a letter to Santa, just in time to have it delivered by Christmas.

“Basically, this is the day for kids to come and have a good time,” she said.

Caldwell added Kids Day has been held in Standish for “quite a few years.” She said the St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital has participated in recent years, but will not this year due to visiting restrictions pertaining to children at this time.
