STANDISH — When Republic Services’ contract for trash pickup in the city of Standish ends June 30, Sunrise Disposal Services Incorporated, Tawas City, will take over the duties of waste and recycling collection after a decision made by city council on June 18.

Representatives from both rubbish collection services presented bids to the city and stated the case for their companies to city council the night the decision to change to Sunrise was made.

According to the bids, from July 1 to June 30, 2010, which would be the first year of a three-year contract, Sunrise is 58 cents cheaper per mixed waste cart (Sunrise: $7.27; Republic: $7.85) and 19 cents cheaper per recycling collection receptacle (Sunrise: $2.81; Republic: $3) for the city.

The bids also show that by the third year, recycling and waste collection services combined would be a dollar cheaper by contracting with Sunrise.

Sunrise’s agent, Kristine DeTroyer, said new carts for city homes would be ordered swiftly, but added the waiting time could be four-eight weeks. She says used carts may be distributed to residents or that bagged garbage pickup would be done in the interim.
