DEEP RIVER TOWNSHIP — Saturday, Jan. 17, the Sterling Sportsmen Association (SSA) is hosting a snowmobile safety class at its facilities in Deep River Township for children ages 12 to 17.

SSA Instructor Cy Brefka, who has been teaching the class for 10 years, says the class will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at about 5 p.m. Pre-registration is not required for the $10 class, but is preferred, as it will allow the SSA to know how many lunches it will need to provide, says Brefka.

“Marty (Schman, fellow SSA instructor) and I will be teaching the class,” Brefka said. “We’ll be discussing laws and maintenance techniques.”

He says the safety certificate received upon completion of the class is recognized not only locally, but worldwide.

“A lot of people go to Canada to ride,” Brefka said. “The [safety] class is required in Canada too and they accept our certificates as well.”

He also says anyone attending the class should bring a snowmobile as a course will be setup for practicing and demonstrating purposes.

In addition, Brefka encourages adults and parents to stay for the course as well.

“Once the students leave us it’s likely they’ll never ride with us again,” the SSA instructor said. “So parents need to know these things too.”

He says the maximum capacity for the class is 80, although, they have never reached capacity.

For further information or to sign up for the class, please contact Brefka at 989-697-3482, Schman at 989-654-3317 or Don Kroczaleski at 989-654-2227.
