Sterling Sportsmen’s Association to host Walleye Bonanza

STANDISH — The Sterling Sportsmen’s Association is hosting its annual amateur Walleye Bonanza tournament Saturday, Aug. 7, at Eagle Bay Marina.

The tournament pays prize money through 20th place, with a first-place prize of $1,000.

Event coordinator Tom Knochel said the event has been held annually for more than 10 years and consistently has 80 boats participating.

“It’s a great event for amateurs and local people who love to fish,” Knochel said.

Cost of entry for the tournament is $20 per person or a minimum of $40 per boat. All participants must be older than 16 years of age.

Knochel said people interested in entering can mail in an entry form which they can find in fliers for the event, located in businesses in the area.

“People can also register at the day of the tournament at the marina,” he said.

The tournament will begin at 6:30 a.m. and the weigh-in will take place at 4:30 p.m..

“We (weigh) the five best fish,” Knochel said.

He said that more than $3,000 will be given out in cash and prizes.

“The Sterling Sportsmen are a nonprofit organization, and any money we take in from all our events go towards things we do in the community,” Knochel said.

He said the group holds numerous classes for kids, like hunter’s safety and ATV safety, for no charge.

Knochel said the Walleye Bonanza is a great event for people in the community to come out and participate in.

“The local Boy Scouts will be out there selling hot dogs and pop, so it all works out for everybody,” he said.

Knochel said a small group of people started the tournament years ago and as it got bigger they decided to let the Sportsmen run it.

He said without community involvement, the Walleye Bonanza would not be possible.

“It really is a great event,” Knochel said.
