Take part in March is Reading Month

March is Reading Month in Michigan. All month long, school districts and libraries across the state will be going all-out to encourage children of all ages to pick up a book and spend time reading.

We give March is Reading Month our full support. Our state puts a lot of effort into March is Reading Month, and with good reason. Reading is a keystone skill in life, and there is a direct correlation between reading and success. Simply put, you need one in order to achieve the other.

The trick is to make reading fun, and the statewide reading extravaganza does a good job of engaging kids through activities, challenges, and bribery. It makes reading into a big deal — because seriously, it is.

We encourage parents to check with their children’s school and their local libraries about activities and programs offered during March. We also think parents should find ways to take part in reading activities along with their kids.

If schools set reading challenges or offer rewards for reading, set aside some time to visit the library so your child can pick out a book, magazine, comic, or other reading selection. Ask your child how their reading is going, and what they’re reading about. Encourage them to meet their reading goals and praise them for their efforts.

Reading could also become a family activity this month. If your kids are working to log reading minutes, set aside some time to read together. If you have a car trip planned, put the earbuds and video games away and read aloud part of the way.

Finally, while March is Reading Month is targeted at students, it is not just for kids. Libraries often have reading activities for adults as well. Whether you’re a reading fanatic or someone who picks up a book only once in a blue moon, March is a great time to expand your horizons, whatever you choose to read: a novel, a magazine article about the latest scientific find, a how-to guide — or even a newspaper.
