AUBURN HILLS — And then there were three.

With eight area wrestlers qualifying for the individual state wrestling finals this weekend, Day 2 of wrestling action saw the field narrowed to just three.

Whittemore-Prescott’s Ridge Schutte and Charlie Prescott as well as Standish-Sterling Central’s Dylan Kolbiaz all find themselves still alive in the consolation rounds scheduled for Saturday, March 4, at The Palace of Auburn Hills beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Prescott (285) made it as far as the championship semifinals without a loss, but fell to Logan Kennedy by decision 3-1 to take him out of the running for the state championship.

Prescott saw wins in the first two rounds, beating River Fox by decision 2-1 Friday to advance to the quarterfinals, and defeating Luke Overweg by decision 3-2 Friday to stay alive.

Prescott will next wrestle in the consolation semifinals beginning at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

His classmate Schutte (171) will have a little longer route if he wants to earn a third-place finish Saturday.

Schutte started his tournament by pinning Ethan Stiffler Thursday, but was defeated by Zac Checkley by decision 6-4 in overtime in the quarterfinals Friday morning. Schutte was visibly upset with the loss.

He went on to pin Corbin Dundas in the second consolation round, also known as the blood round, 2:03 into the match. He will wrestle in the third consolation round starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

SSC’s Kolbiaz (112) found himself taking a similar route to Schutte, winning his first round match over Alexander Shrum by decision 2-1 Thursday.

Kolbiaz was then defeated by Jonathon White by decision 2-1 after three overtime periods, knocking him out of the running for the championship.

He followed that up with a win over Ethan Reed by decision in the blood round to advance to action Saturday. He will also wrestle in the third consolation round starting at 8:30 a.m.

The Herald will be posting results and photos live from The Palace Saturday morning, so be sure to check back for results during the last few rounds of action.
