STANDISH — Two suspects are behind bars thanks to the help of Standish residents and the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department.

On Wednesday, Dec. 29, an elderly woman was robbed while shopping at Glen’s Market in Standish.

Two suspects, Dale A. Janz Jr., 20, and Joshua W. Gibson, 21, both of Standish, were charged and arraigned for larceny in connection with the robbery of the woman while she was shopping using a mobility scooter according to Undersheriff Donald McIntyre. Both Janz and Gibson are being charged with larceny of a person. Gibson was out on bond for a domestic violence charge at the time of the incident.

“When the incident occurred, a number of citizens at the scene called (the robbery) in,” he said.

According to McIntyre, one witness followed the suspects as they fled Glen’s in a full-sized van.

“That citizen was able to identify a plate number for the vehicle,” McIntyre said.

McIntyre said a deputy located the two suspects and apprehended them shortly after the robbery occurred with their van partially stuck in a ditch on Pine River Road near Washington Street. He added that there was a brief foot chase.

“It appears the suspects attempted to turn the vehicle around and got stuck,” he said.

McIntyre said the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department is thankful that area citizens helped with the capture of the two suspects.

“We really appreciate the citizens who helped us stop these (suspects),” he said.
