Two hunters found dead from falling accidents

ARENAC COUNTY — The Arenac County Sheriff’s Department was called out to two separate incidents Tuesday in which hunters were found dead.

Frank Illig, 57,of Standish and Jesse Wagner, 33, of Auburn were found dead on Nov. 9 in two separate locations from injuries sustained from falling from their tree-stands, according to preliminary autopsy results given to Undersheriff Donald McIntyre.

He said that Illig was found near Grace Ann Trail in Sterling and Wagner was found near Jose Road near Omer. McIntyre said that neither subject was wearing a safety harness.

“This is a very unfortunate situation,” McIntyre said. “Our heart goes out to both of their families.”

McIntyre said that in each incident, family members called the sheriff’s department when the hunters did not arrive home when expected.

McIntyre said that the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department does not receive a large amount of calls for hunting-related accidents.

“This is very unusual that these two accidents happened on the same day,” he said.
