STANDISH -- It was a win fit for a King -- SSC coach Kevin King that is -- as the Standish-Sterling girls basketball team held Ogemaw Heights to just four points in the fourth quarter for a 53-51 come-from-behind victory Jan. 14 to end the Falcons season-long undefeated streak.

The Panthers' defense didn't allow the Falcons a single field goal in the final period. The only four points OHHS scored were on 4-of-10 free throw shooting.

"The girls showed a great will to win in the fourth (quarter)," King said.

He said SSCs gameplan was to try to wear the Falcons down throughout the course of the game through constant pressure. "We went in thinking we could tire them out," he said. "We thought they hadn't been pushed (condition-wise) all season, and it worked."

SSCs Paige Raes hit the tying bucket with 58 seconds to play. And then Abbye Gulvas made what King called an impressive drive to give the Panthers their first lead of the ballgame with 30 second remaining.

King had nothing but praise for the Falcons in his post-game comments.

"They were undefeated for a reason," he said. "Ashley Thompson is a tremendous player. She put up 22 (points). You're never happy with a player putting up 22 points, but she's scored 30 points in each of her last three games.

"They're a good team. Coach Hansen's got a great program going on over there," he added.

Raes led the Panthers with 13 points. Christina Proulx added 10 and Emily Meschke had eight.
