STANDISH — Patrons of the Mary Johnston Memorial Library in Standish were being directed to use the back door after an act of vandalism smashed the glass on the library’s main entrance sometime overnight on Friday, Jan. 6.
According to head librarian Hilda Carruthers, she received a phone call from Standish Police Chief Mark Christian at 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning, informing her that someone had thrown a rock through the front door of the library.
Christian said the police received a call from a person walking by with their dog about the broken door around 11:48 Friday night.
Since the library is owned by the city, Carruthers said vandalism is covered by the city’s insurance policy. Carruthers said staff from Glass Doctor in Standish came by Monday afternoon to replace the glass and cleaned up the shattered remains of the door.
She said the glass was dangerous to patrons while it was still cracked on the door, and she didn’t want it tracked into the library. Additionally, a cracked door during cold weather would have presented additional problems, such as heating the building.
“When the weather gets bad we would have a heck of a mess,” Carruthers said.
Christian said the matter was still under investigation, and no one had been arrested yet.
