STANDISH — A video surfaced recently on youtube.com showing two students from Standish-Sterling Central High School fighting off of school grounds.

The video has been removed from the site and the students involved were questioned by Principal Roger Fritz.

Fritz said he received information that the fight was going to occur from the school’s liaison officer from the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department and that the two students involved have been questioned about the incident. No disciplinary action has been taken.

“This is a situation where we do everything we can to prevent them (from fighting),” he said.

Fritz said that Standish-Sterling Community Schools have programs in place to help students resolve issues they may have with one another.

“These two students had an issue with each other and they decided this would be how they would resolve it,” he said. “I like to think that we do the best we can to deal with student conflicts.”

Superintendent Michael Dodge said the school is looking into the video.

“We are taking a stance on this type of behavior,” Dodge said.

He said with safe school laws in place students can be disciplined for being involved in dangerous activities, like fighting or bullying, outside of school grounds.

“There are things schools can do,” Dodge said. “We can get legal authorities involved because these (students) are minors.”

Dodge said the video shows the students fighting with no protection.

“We are not going to tolerate it,” he said. “Kids can organize a fight quickly. This was premeditated.”

Donald McIntyre, undersheriff for the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department said the department would not seek out charges in this situation.

“In a case like this both parties are willing participants,” he said. “We can not charge anyone with assault.”

McIntyre said the Internet is filled with videos of teenagers fighting in a mixed martial arts style.
