Whittemore church celebrating 125th anniversary

WHITTEMORE — The Whittemore United Methodist Church is celebrating its 125th year of fellowship, worship and praise on Sept. 26 and 27.

“For a church to reach 125 years is a major milestone,” said Chairman of the church’s anniversary committee, Carol Long.

She says the two-day celebration will acknowledge the church’s past while offering plenty of attractions to current or former members of the church.

“On Saturday, we will be having a pancake breakfast and we will be having an ice cream social,” Long said. “There will be games for our kids. … We will have past pastors coming to the event.”

According to Long, the church district’s superintendent will also be on hand to deliver a sermon, which she says is a rare occurrence for churches in the area.

An e-mail from Long received by the Independent gives a brief history of the church.

“In the spring of 1884, amidst a lumber camp community, a circuit rider came on foot from Sterling area to serve Keystone, Reno and Whittemore with religious services. The first meetings were held in the Bullock Hall,” the e-mail said. “In 1889, the church was given the name of ‘Whittemore Methodist Episcopal Church.’

“For 125 years the church has been a gathering place for the area. Many groups and organizations have played a vital part in its history, keeping it alive, warm and ever responsive to the religious need of the surrounding community,” the e-mail continued. “Many generations of families have worshipped together here and continue to do so.”
