Wild game on the menu for May 3 depot dinner

STANDISH — People looking to try something a little less common for dinner can sample various wild game while helping raise money for the Standish Historical Depot May 3 during the Fish, Fowl and Frontier fundraising dinner.

Arenac Heritage Route Authority member Dr. Ronald Schwab said the dinner, which is being held at the Standish American Legion hall, will be prepared by Dixie Dave Minar, who will offer up several types of wild game.

“We’re having a menu of perch, whitefish, wild boar, venison, beaver barley soup, pheasant stew, cheeses, smoked salmon and smoked turkey for hors d’oeuvres,” he said.

Dinner is not the lone itinerary item for the night. Schwab said guests will have the chance to win various items throughout the event.

“There’s a big silent auction and we’ll have gun auctions throughout the evening like normal,” he said.

Money from the dinner and auctions will help support operations of the Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center, including keeping someone there to answer the phone, Schwab said. He said because it was restored with Michigan Department of Transportation funding, there needs to be an employee at the depot for a certain number of hours per week to provide tourist information.

“It goes to support the depot and its function as a tourist, information center for the county,” he said. “We get a lot of calls there about what there is to do in the county.”

Tickets for the dinner are $40 per person, or $350 for a group of 10 people. For tickets or more information, call the depot at 989-718-3021. Appetizers are being served at 6 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7 p.m.
