Wood stove believed to cause fire in Arenac Township


ARENAC TOWNSHIP — A fire reported Tuesday night in Arenac Township, in the 1700 block of Washington Street, is believed to be the result of a wood stove issue, however it’s cause is under investigation by a Michigan State Police Fire Marshall.

“There was heavy structural damage to the house,” said Omer-Arenac Fire Department Chief Brian Leja. “The garage is completely gone. There was fire damage to the family room and the hallway in the house, smoke damage throughout it.”

Leja added one member on the Standish Area Fire Authority, which assisted at the scene of the fire, was taken to the hospital during the course of fighting the fire, however, he added, the firefighter was released with no serious injuries. The AuGres-Sims-Whitney Fire Department also assisted.

The fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night and Leja said firefighters were on the scene till approximately 11 p.m.
