Au Gres race a chance to enjoy fall splendor, support Special Olympics

Au GRES — Autumn colors and the sunshine on Lake Huron are expected to bring runners out to Au Gres Oct. 14 for the fifth annual Lake Shore Lap, a fundraiser race hosted by the Wertz Warriors.

The event includes three races — a 5K, 10K and half-marathon — and a kids one-mile fun run. All races start at the Au Gres Knights of Columbus Hall. Wertz Warrior Brian Knoll said all three races take participants on a route with plenty of fall scenery and a view of Lake Huron. Runners have enjoyed the route in past races and Knoll said it should be even better this year.

“Everybody’s liked it in the past,” he said. “They’ve said what a nice run it was. It’s going to be nice this year because it’s all blacktop now. There’s no gravel anymore.”

Around 90 runners participated last year, Knoll said. All participants will receive a medal, he said.

Runners can pre-register for the race at The cost for the half-marathon is $40, $25 for the 10K and $20 for the 5K. The kids one-mile race is free.

Knoll said people can sign up the day of the event at the K of C Hall. According to the race sign-up page, registration begins at 7 a.m. Oct. 14. The half-marathon is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., and the 5K and 10K are slated to start at 9:15 a.m. The kids race is at 9:30 a.m.
