Au Gres to Rock ’n’ Roll for 25th annual car cruise

Au GRES — The 25th annual Au Gres Cruisers Car Club’s Rock ’n’ Roll Weekend July 27-29 will have music and entertainment, a wine tasting and barbecue, a cruise night, a car show and awards with trophies.

Vice President Glenn Hill said he expects people in the thousands to attend.

“It’s not like any other cruise,” Hill said. “It is an awesome cruise with spectators where people actually enjoy it. We put a lot of work and effort into it.”

Hill said with this being the 25th year the club has been around, it’s a good time to remember all the previous years.

“We take pride in our nice show we put on,” he said. “That’s our number one objective, to put on a nice show.”

The weekend events will kick off with music, dancing and a wine tasting and barbecue hosted by Modern Craft Winery behind Zanner’s Ice Cream Shoppe from 3-9 p.m.

The car cruise lineup will start Saturday, July 28, at 3 p.m. with the cruise scheduled to begin at 5:15 in front of the Au Gres-Sims High School on Michigan Avenue. The 13-mile cruise will start at the north end of town on Water Street and end at the Au Gres Riverfront Park, where there will be dancing and live music by the band The Sinclairs.

General admission is $5 and it is free to the first 300 cruise cars.

Hill said there will also be trophies and contests for anyone to join and food and refreshments for sale at the pavilion.

The car show will begin Sunday, July 29, with registration from 8 a.m. until noon, and will cost $10. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.

Hill said there will be 25 classes voted on by show participants for the top three in each class.

“Everybody who enters a car gets to vote,” he said. “They vote on everybody who’s there.”

The special awards, he said, will be voted on by the club and include Best of Show, Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Chassis, Best Back Seat and more.

The night will also have entertainment and games by The Doo Wop DJ’s.

President K.J Edmonds, who has been a member since 2002 and is serving as president for his first year, said the club gives back between $5,000 and $8,000 to the city for things such as fireworks.

Hill said the show is dedicated to all the original old cruisers.

“We’re just trying to carry on the tradition and keep it going,” he said. “It’s the biggest thing that happens in Au Gres, period.”

The show costs between $15,000 and $17,000 a year to put on, he said, which is covered through funds raised from the event itself each year.

“We try really hard to make it the best,” Hill said. “That’s why people should come. It’s a lot of fun.”

The Fireworks is something we donate to but The Au Gres - Simms Band helps us at the Cruise and receives $3000.00 + also the Local Boy Scouts receive a portion of the 50 - 50 , Au Gres - Simms Baseball led by Troy Saunders $1000.00. Au Gres City Park is another, in the past we have donated the pavilion where Music in the Park is held, Most of the picnic tables ,electrical upgrades and from last years funds a new $2600.00 cooler for use by all who rent the Pavilion we also help support the Music in the Park. I just want to be sure to not take anything away from the hard work the Fireworks committee does to serve and entertain all of us, we donate to them but by no means are we a major contributor, the people you see out at the breakwall on the weekend of the 4th of July are the ones who deserve all the credit for another great event. Next year give a little time and help them out. When you see a Flame sign outside a local business in Au Gres or Twining stating WE PROUDLY SPONSOR THE AU GRES CRUISER'S CRUISE AND SHOW They sponsor us and we hope you will thank them by shopping there as we do. This years Cruise is in honor of all the Original Cruiser's and all past members They made it happen. And in closing Thanks to all the Members, Sponsors, Police and Fire Department it don't happen without you. See you all again for year 26.
