Auction for the arts keeping fundraising fun

STANDISH — The Northeast Michigan Arts Council’s annual Auction for the Arts, which is scheduled for April 14, is vital for arts council programming, but it is also a lot of fun.

NEMAC Executive Director Gail Schmidt said around 100 people typically register for the auction, and often people who plan on dropping in to see what’s available end up having a good time and sticking around.

“Just as an example, I had two ladies come from Gladwin last year,” she said. “They had never been here, but they’d heard about it. They bought items, but they said they had a really good time. They said it was a fun atmosphere and the live bidding was fun. A lot of people when they’re going down the highway will see the big sign that says ‘auction today’ and they’ll come in and they’ll stay, because they have so much fun.”

More than 200 items will be available at the auction, Schmidt said. Auctioneer Richard Martin will once again run the sale.

Schmidt said the auction raises around $10,000 per year and without it, it is doubtful the art center could host events throughout the year.

“$10,000 doesn’t even cover our overhead for the art center,” she said. “Basically without it, we’d probably close our doors.”

“I write grants for projects, but they’re small amounts,” Schmidt said. “This is our major source of income to keep us afloat. It goes for programming. Cash that you have in the bank has to fund the day-to-day operations. It funds our art camp, the Choraleers, the concert series for children and the family series.”

The auction is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., but doors will open at 9 a.m. for people to look at items being sold. There is no cost to register to bid, Schmidt said.
