Backpack giveaway to benefit local students

STANDISH –– Local students will receive 220 donated backpacks through the annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway July 23.

TCC District Manager Jake Chase said he was looking forward to his first year participating in the giveaway.

Nearly 1,000 participating TCC and Wireless Zone stores teamed up to donate 172,000 backpacks full of supplies nationwide, according to a press release from parent company Round Room LLC. The backpacks will be given out to ensure children across the nation are prepared for the beginning of the school year in the upcoming fall.

Chase said the Standish location will team up with the Bay City location to throw an event to promote safety during that day.

“What we’re doing is setting up a safety event in our Bay City store where we’re going to have fire trucks and police officers there to help give out backpacks, make sure everybody has their car seats in correctly and go over fire safety, and we’ll have insurance people out there to make sure everybody’s safe,” he said.

According to Public Relations Director Sophie Maccagnone, Round Room CEO Scott Moorehead hired his pastor, Ryan McCarty, to help create the Culture of Good program at each store, which then launched the annual giveaway.

“I’m very excited about it,” he said. “I think it’s a pretty cool thing TCC does.”

Since 2013, TCC has donated more than 505,000 backpacks through the giveaway.

“This is our fifth TCC School Rocks Backpack Giveaway, and we are ecstatic to bring Wireless Zone on board to assist in supporting the education of young children in our communities,” Moorehead said. “We are proud to help our local families prepare for the upcoming school year by taking some of the financial burden off their shoulders.”

Not only does the giveaway positively impact families around the nation, but the employees dispersing the backpacks as well.

“Over the last five years, the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway has consistently generated positive reactions in each community it has a presence in,” Maccagnone said. “An employee survey found that 92 percent of TCC employees had a better sense of fulfillment in their work when they participate in the company’s Culture of Good initiatives and each year, the community contributions continue to grow.”

The free backpacks will include various school supplies, including pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders and glue, according to the press release.

Each store will donate 220 backpacks, one per child, available on a first come, first served basis. The Standish TCC is located at 529 S. Main St. in Suite B. The backpacks will be given away from 1-4 p.m. or until supplies are gone. Any remaining backpacks not picked up will be donated to local schools.
