Civil War veterans honored at Clayton Township Cemetery

A large crowd gathered May 31 to honor Luther Johnson, George Fish, Alva Scofield and Charles Hamlin - four Civil War veterans buried at the Clayton Township Cemetery. Prior to Saturday, the four Union soldiers had been buried without proper Civil War markers, which were obtained by Clayton Township resident Sandra Bowen. Local veterans from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post conducted a modern memorial ceremony, and then the Bay County chapter of Sons of Union Veterans performed a Civil War burial ritual. Biographies of Johnson, Fish, Scofield and Hamlin were red aloud during the ritual.
