Clayton Twp. to hold second spring cleanup day

CLAYTON TWP. — Residents of Clayton Township will once again have a chance to turn in old tires or appliances sitting around their homes or property free of charge during the township’s second spring cleanup Saturday, May 4.

Township Supervisor Raymond Daniels said the decision was made to hold a second cleanup day after seeing the success of last year’s inaugural effort.

Last year’s cleanup saw the collection of more than 600 car tires, 70 yards’ worth of trash and 20 yards of scrap iron and cost the township a total of $2,200, Daniels said.

After speaking with Republic Services, who provides waste management to Clayton Township along with dumpsters for cleanup days, Daniels said he was informed that typically when cleanup days are held, the second year yields more trash being turned in.

“We will see,” Daniels said. “If we do, maybe we will continue to hold them annually.”

Overall, Daniels said he feels there is a need for something like this in the community, especially after hearing feedback from those who participated last year.

“I think it’s a real good idea,” Daniels said. “I had a couple people tell me they picked up a few tires along the road in the township, hoping that we were going to have another cleanup this year so they can bring them over and it wouldn’t cost them anything.”

Daniels explained that over the years, he has noticed that not many people will throw a mattress into a ditch unless one is already there, so the hope is to collect any trash in the area before someone may be tempted to add to the mess.

“A lot of people won’t be the first guy but they don’t mind being the second,” he said.

While automobile tires and smaller tires will be accepted, Daniels said some larger tires will not be accepted.

He added that paints and other liquids will also not be accepted.

The spring cleanup is for Clayton Township residents only. Daniels said people should be prepared to show proof of residency.

The event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dumpsters will be set up at 4350 Knight Rd. in Sterling. For more information, call 989-450-9826.
