Crop seminar to cover phase of MAEAP verification

STANDISH — A field crop seminar scheduled for March 1 at the Andersons Group elevator in Standish meets the Phase 1 requirement of the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program.

MAEAP Technician Amanda Turner said the seminar is free to attend, and that registration starts at 8 a.m. the day of the event. The crop seminar is open to farmers from outside the county as well, and several speakers are on the agenda, Turner said.

“It’s a MAEAP Phase 1 event, so I’ll be talking about the program, and I will also have my MAEAP verifier there,” she said. “He’s going to talk about some stuff too, mainly storage of agri-chemicals, emergency planning and record keeping for farms. We’ll also have two speakers from (Michigan State University) Extension. They’ll be talking about new and emerging weeds in field crops, and different insect pests.”

Insurance representatives will also be on hand to talk about pollution liability options, Turner said. She said with the event being a MAEAP Phase 1 opportunity, farmers just beginning to work toward verification, or those who have completed the other steps but are still missing Phase 1, can take care of that requirement by attending.

“MAEAP is a three-step system,” she said. “Step one is to basically attend an educational meeting to get that credit to learn about the program. Step two would be, if they want, have me on their farm to do an assessment. Step three is verification. There are technicians that work with farmers in neighboring counties that are trying to get verified, but they may have skipped Phase 1 and may need to do it to get verified.”

Attendees will head over to the neighboring business, Helena Chemical, to look at a sprayer and talk about chemical storage, Turner said.

The event is expected to wrap up around 1 p.m. Lunch will be served, so RSVPs are requested, Turner said. People interested in attending can call Turner at 989-726-3413 or Arenac Conservation District Administrator Dawn Hergott at 989-846-4565-ext. 5.
