District library to host Astronomy for Everyone

STANDISH — The Iosco-Arenac District Library is hosting Astronomy for Everyone April 18 at Pine River Golf Course in Standish, with former NASA consultant Dr. Kevin Manning presenting on astronomy and then leading an outdoor telescope observation.

According to district library Director Stephanie Olsen, Manning will be presenting about multiple areas of astronomy including satellites, flights, telescopes, stars and more.

“He’s going to cover a little bit of everything with astronomy,” Olsen said. “There will be a projector. It’ll be a planetariumtype program.”

Following the slideshow presentation, Olsen said Dr. Manning will lead the group outdoors for a telescope observation to look at the night sky.

“I’m hoping it’s dark enough,” Olsen said. “Hopefully there’s a nice, dark sky to work with.”

Olsen said golf courses are dark, making them good places to use telescopes.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. It is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call 989-362-2651 or the Mary Johnston Memorial Library in Standish at 989-846-6611.
