Dorothy Burtch, 92, lifelong resident of Standish, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 30, 2017, at St. Mary’s of Standish Skilled Nursing.

Dorothy was born March 31, 1925, in Standish to Marie (Sprung) Courneya and Ernest Courneya. Upon the death of Marie in 1926, Dorothy, age 1 year, was then raised by her aunt and uncle, John and Emma Courneya, who became her mother and father in every sense of those words.

Dorothy married Vance Burtch on Nov. 7, 1942, as he was preparing to leave for service in the Army during World War II. This marriage lasted 75 years as a living example of devotion and love. Vance preceded the passing of Dorothy by just less than three months.

Dorothy and Vance loved to travel and covered much of the United States together, but Dorothy’s favorite destination was Williamsburg, Va., which she and Vance visited many times. During their retirement years, Dorothy and Vance continued to travel but began spending more and more time each summer at their cottage on Wixom Lake, which became their summer home. As much as Dorothy loved their summers at their cottage, her favorite time of year was Christmas at her home in Standish. Dorothy spent days and weeks making her home a warm and inviting Christmas wonderland for the youngest to the oldest members of her family, and also to her many friends who loved to visit during the Christmas holidays. But beyond all else, family was at the center of Dorothy’s life. From her children to grandchildren, to her great-grandchildren and to her great-great-grandchildren, Dorothy deeply and dearly loved them all.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother and father, Emma and John Courneya; her biological parents, Ernest and Marie Courneya; her loving husband, Vance; her dear daughter, Nancy; sisters, Helen Smith and Evelyn Goyette; and her brother, Ernest Courneya.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, John Vance Jr. (TerriLyee) and Douglas Paul (Peggy); grandchildren, Debby Marks, Amy (Ron) Gould, John III (Gretchen) Burtch, Douglas Jr. (Ellen Goff) and Jamie (Robert) Goodwin. Dorothy is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews across the country.

As Dorothy and Vance wished, cremation has taken place, and a combined service for both will take place at a future date in the spring.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Mirza for his wonderful care and a very special thank you to all those involved at skilled nursing for their wonderful care and many kindnesses to both our mother and father during their stay.
