Died Nov. 12, 2017

Ellen J. Gillings, 85, of Sterling passed away Nov. 12, 2017.

She was born May 27, 1932, to Walter and Ann (Stelmach) Federspiel. Ellen married Harlow E. Gillings in 1958 and enjoyed 57 years together before his death in 2015. Ellen loved being a teacher and past students still remember her with fondness as “Mrs. Gillings.” Her long career as a teacher began in 1950 at Townline School in Arenac County, a one-room schoolhouse, following a year at County Normal. She completed her education graduating from Eastern Michigan University and enjoyed teaching at Whittemore-Prescott and finally Standish-Sterling Central. She was very artistic and enjoyed painting, drawing and today’s intricate coloring books. She also enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles, solving word challenges and being among friends and family. You could find her sharing her pride of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their accomplishments with all.

Ellen is survived by her children, Jeffrey Gillings (Dawn Doyle) and David (Megan) Gillings; stepchildren, Gary (Barbara) Gillings and Kaye (Roger) Rasbury; daughter-in-law, Marcia Gillings; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Robert (Connie) Gillings and Richard Gillings; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert and Glen Federspiel; brother-in-law, William Gillings; and sisters-in-law, Vernalu Gillings and Helen Gillings

Our family would like to give a special thanks to Carrie, Jessica and the staff of caregivers at Eden Fields in Standish for their friendship and caring of Ellen and the socialization with peers and activities it allowed her to enjoy. Also, a special thanks to her hospice nurse Tammy Gillard, who was on call for her at all times.

Per Ellen’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with interment to be at Clayton Township Cemetery. A memorial luncheon is planned for Friday, Dec. 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Clayton Township Hall. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel, Standish.
