Ernest Arthur Wenkel passed away at home Aug. 31, 2018, with his family by his side.

He was born Sept. 19, 1932, to Fred and Caroline (Krause) Wenkel on the family farm west of Standish. Ernie grew up and lived on the farm all his life. He attended Bethlehem Lutheran School until the seventh grade. He finished his education at Standish High School. On Nov. 9, 1952, he married Barbara Ann Gulvas at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Standish. He farmed his entire life. He was a member of Michigan Milk Producers Association for 50 years as well as a member of the Gibson Township Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and loved being with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara. He is also survived by his sons, Gerald (Celia Young) Wenkel and Daniel (Lyn Meihls) Wenkel; as well as his daughters, Caroline (Dan) Goick and Mary Beth (Russell) Bechtel. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Carie (Scott) Knochel, Holly (Jeff) Schneider, Geralyn Wenkel, Lacey (Kirk) Adams, Beth (Jake) Knochel, Brooke Robinson, Heather Robinson, Brian Wenkel, Justin (Autumn) Bechtel, Cody Bechtel, Jeremy Phipps and Chris (Brook Campbell) Young; and 13 great-grandchildren. Ernest is survived by one sister, Eileen Partlo of Bay City; and one brother, Harold Robert (Annabelle Hilyard) Wenkel of Sterling. He is lastly survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ernest was predeceased by three sisters, Velinda Boetefuer, Esther Eland and Doris Wenkel; two brothers, Hersel Wenkel and Clarence Wenkel; and in-laws, Carl Partlo and Leo (Shirley) Gulvas.

The family would like to thank his personal staff for their dedication over the past two years — too many to name but all wonderful, caring people. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Heartland Hospice, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel with Pastor Matthew Dent officiating. The family will greet family and friends from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday. Interment will be in Sterling Cemetery.
