Free Thanksgiving meal being served Nov. 16 at Community United Methodist in Standish

Posted

STANDISH — The Community United Methodist Church in Standish will be serving a free Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, Nov. 16, from 4:30-7 p.m.

Rose Bledsoe said this is the fifth time the church will host the dinner, which includes all of the traditional Thanksgiving foods.

“We started it up a few years ago thinking we were blessed and we could share our blessings with the rest of the community,” she said.

The dinner has become popular, with more than 200 people attending last year’s meal.

“We peel 100 pounds of potatoes the day before,” Bledsoe said. “This year we’re cooking eight 20-pound turkeys. We ran out last year. We cooked six.”

Patrons have enjoyed the dinners in previous years, Bledsoe said.

“It’s just a joyous occasion,” she said. “People are happy to be here. It’s friendly and welcoming. They are very thankful and appreciate the good food.”

While the event is free, Community UMC will accept donations. The church is located 201 S. Forest St. in Standish.
