Gladys Barbara Nixon, 96, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at The Brook in West Branch.

She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Bay City to William and Barbara (Beeckman) Erno. Gladys was orphaned at the age of 15, and she with the help of her brother ran the family farm in Bay City. She then later moved with her husband and children in 1946 and farmed in Au Gres. Gladys was on the school board in Au Gres and was the town librarian for a time. She was on the Arenac County Planning Commission and was a member of the Au Gres Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, and playing shuffleboard and pinochle. Gladys was very active in the community and always provided a helping hand when it was needed. She was active in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Au Gres and later in the Lutheran church in Deland, Fla. She wintered in Deland, Fla., for many years, finally making it her year-round home.

Gladys is survived by her children, Dennis (Elizabeth nee Scanlan) Nixon of Au Gres, Richard (Jean nee Clair) Nixon of Turner, Bill Nixon of Au Gres and David (Barbara nee Schmidt); significant other, Milt Wordelman of Deland, Fla.; grandchildren, Jim Nixon of Florida, Troy Nixon of Au Gres, Leslie Nixon Bettega of Florida, Jennifer Nixon Boehme of North Carolina, Sarah Nixon Walter of Fowlerville, Ben Nixon of Au Gres, Tom Nixon of Au Gres, Justin Nixon of Au Gres, Ryan Nixon of Au Gres, Amanda Nixon Makela of Texas and Kora Nixon; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mildred Badgley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Thomas “Tom”; son, John Nixon; brother, Elmer Erno; and daughter-in-law, Linda Bishop Nixon.

A memorial and graveside service will be held at a later date at the Sims-Whitney Cemetery in Au Gres.

Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1264 Tonkey Rd., Au Gres, MI 48765.
