Inge (Maarssø) Fischer, 84, passed away May 14, 2019, in Standish after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by her immediate family.

She is survived by her husband of more than 57 years, Dr. Hans H. Fischer; her daughters, Lynn Mastie of Colorado and Lori Kelley of Ohio; and her son, Lars Fischer of Massachusetts.

Inge was born in Faxe, Denmark, on Jan. 6, 1935. She lived most of her youth in Vejle, Denmark. Inge had a remarkable life that found her as a young RN traveling to Scotland and then finally to the U.S. where she was an exchange nurse at Harper Hospital in Detroit and met a young surgeon from Germany. After their marriage in 1961 and the birth of Lynn in 1963, they moved to Standish where Hans assumed a surgical position in the new hospital being built. She raised two more children with the utmost care and compassion. Inge helped establish the obstetrics department in the new hospital and was active in the Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She then took over the bookkeeping of Hans’ office. She participated closely in all three of her children’s lives by spending a day with each of them in their elementary classrooms, attending their myriad of high school athletic events and visiting them in college. She continued to follow her children as they left Michigan and started careers and families of their own. At her death her legacy lives on, being survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Inge was a woman of grace and elegance who elevated all those who had a chance to get to know her. To us she was wife and mom, hardworking around the house, but quick to laugh and have fun with us. Her easy-going nature will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held at the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel on June 1 from 2-5 p.m. It is at the request of the family to not send flowers but to donate to Eden Fields Assisted Living and Memory Care.

Special thanks to all of the caring professionals at Eden Fields and Compassus Hospice for all that they have done during this time.
