On Saturday, July 8, 2017, in the early morning, James Joseph “Jody” Powell of Standish passed away peacefully at the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor surrounded by his loved ones.

James was born Nov. 14, 1962, to George and Barbara Powell (LeClerc) in Detroit. He attended Standish-Sterling Central High School and loved playing baseball growing up. He got the nickname “Jo the Pro” after he pitched a no-hitter in Little League. He joined the Marine Corps for eight years and was an honor graduate, and afterwards he moved to Montana and became an insurance agent for 27 years. He loved teaching newcomers the trade and was very proud of his accomplishments. In 2007, he moved back to Michigan with his daughter Hailey to be closer to his family in Michigan.

He loved listening to music like Bob Seger and Whitney Houston, and taking pictures. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, making other people laugh and being outdoors. He will be remembered for his toothy smile and ability to light up a room with his laughter.

James was a loving son, father, brother and friend. He is survived by his parents, George and Barbara Powell; his siblings, Mark (Kathy) Powell, Kimberly (Jeffrey) Varadi and Kellee (Mike) Drozdrowski; his three children, Cassandra Powell, Jody Micheal (Kayla) Powell and Hailey Powell; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Michael, Cedar and Finley; and many nephews and nieces. He is also survived by many dear friends.

James is an organ donor and is being cremated, with a memorial service being held Friday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church on M-61 in Standish. There will be a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated for his family’s wishes.
