Kids Day to bring spirit of Christmas

STANDISH — The Standish Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Kids Day Dec. 9 for both Santa and local businesses to welcome kids and stir up a little Christmas spirit in them.

The event kicks off with a Breakfast With Santa from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Courtyard Cafe located in St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital.

Hospital Community Relations Manager Holly Shillair said community members are invited to enjoy their morning with Kris Kringle.

“The kids can sit with Santa and tell him their wish list,” she said. “It provides great opportunities for parents to get photos of their kids with Santa.”

She said the public can use the hospital’s main entrance to get to the Courtyard Cafe for the event, which has typically seen up to 150 people attend the breakfast.

Shillair said she sees familiar faces each year.

“They are very appreciative and it seems the parents come out year after year,” she said. “It turns into an annual event for them.”

Attendees can RSVP for Breakfast With Santa by contacting 989-846-3445.

Kids Day will then continue with activities at local Standish businesses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce Vice President Tara Binder said it is a fun-filled children’s event.

“Local businesses offer free or low-cost crafts for kids, such as making holiday ornaments, painting or getting a picture taken,” she said.

The chamber of commerce organizes the event, and the businesses who register take the initiative to offer an activity of their choosing.

She said parents and children stop at each business for an activity that normally takes 15-20 minutes.

“We are still taking registration for businesses that would like to participate,” Binder said. “We ask that they be registered by Friday, Nov. 24. We will advertise on our website, on our Facebook page and in the Arenac County Independent.”

She said every year the types of businesses that participate vary, and normally five to 10 businesses take part in the event.

Binder said Kids Day is a low-cost event for children to get into the holiday spirit.

“You get to visit local businesses,” she said. “It’s really nice to showcase their business and to show that they are giving back during the holidays for the kids.”
