Kids invited to play ball at Moffatt Township Park this summer

ALGER — Children interested in playing T-ball or baseball this summer are invited to register to play in Alger Parks and Rec’s program.

In its seventh year, the program is available to kids ages 3 and up. Parks and rec Chairwoman Marion Chard said they can play either T-ball or baseball depending on their age and maturity. She said it’s a very laid-back program.

“They’re not on teams per se,” she said. “It’s not official with uniforms. It’s just a for-fun group.”

However, Chard said she hopes to have a baseball league for the kids in the near future.

Games will be played Tuesdays at 6 p.m. starting May 14 at Moffatt Township Park on Henry Street in Alger. There will not be a game the week of July 4, and on the last day, July 9, the kids can enjoy an ice cream social.

Registration is $10 per family. Forms can be found on the Alger Parks and Rec Facebook page or on www.algerparksandrec.org on the News and Events page. Contact information for the coaches, LeeAnna and Jacob Richards, is available on the registration form.

There is no deadline to register and families are welcome to join anytime during the season.

Chard said parks and rec recently received a grant from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe to update the park septic system and from the Bay Area Community Foundation to update the bathrooms. There are currently two grant applications pending to update the ballfield and add dugouts. She said the community has also been a big help.

“We’re excited and we’ve made a lot of progress in the last couple years,” she said.
