Late-night house fire claims life of one man

Au GRES TWP. — A late-night structure fire Oct. 25 claimed the life of a 45-year-old James Badour, of Au Gres Township.

According to Au Gres-Sims-Whitney Fire Chief Kurt Humerickhouse, the fire department was dispatched to the 1900 block of Swenson Road for a fully engulfed structure fire at a residence that was reported to be possibly occupied at approximately 11 p.m.

“After we extinguished the fire we did discover it was occupied,” Humerickhouse said.

Shortly after extinguishing the fire, the fire department was able to locate Badour’s body.

Humerickhouse said 15 firefighters responded to the call, utilizing six trucks on scene and approximately 10,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Assisting the fire department on scene were the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department, Mobile Medical Response and Arenac County Central Dispatch. Michigan State Police Fire Investigator Paul Frechette was also called in to investigate the fire. Firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 4 a.m.

Frechette said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious in nature. He also said the structure was a total loss.

Humerickhouse said in his 30-plus years of being on the fire department, this is the fourth fatality. He stressed the importance of using proper fire prevention measures such as changing the batteries in smoke detectors.
