Lewis G. Gilstrap, 83, of Plantation, Fla., passed away Dec. 18, 2018, at his home.

Lewis was born in Liberty, S.C., on Dec. 27, 1934, to the late D.L. and Sarah (Sanders) Gilstrap. A graduate of Belton High School, he married Kathaleen L. Dittenbir of Au Gres in April 1960. He served 25 years in the Air Force and Army, and and another 20 in the U.S. Department of State.

As a military and U.S. State Department family, Lewis and Kathaleen, along with their two sons, traveled extensively abroad and lived in eight foreign countries. Lewis retired in 1999, after 45 years of government service, and they split their time between Florida and Au Gres.

Lewis was an avid golfer, and enjoyed boating and fishing, and spending time with his Boston terriers. Above all, family was the most important to him, especially his wife and sons. Kathaleen, his wife of 56 years, predeceased him in 2016.

Lewis is survived by his sons, Scott and Alan Gilstrap of Plantation, Fla.; his sister, Rachel Youngblood of Liberty, S.C.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Lewis was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Gilstrap; brothers-in-law, William Dittenbir, John Dewald and William Powell; and sisters-in-law, Winifred Dewald and Carol Dittenbir.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will take place at a date to be determined in Au Gres.
