Mary Ellen Roethke (Dudley), 73, of Standish went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 13, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born Oct. 17, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Carl L. and Willima Dean (Shubert) Roethke. Mary Ellen was co-founder of the Pine River Country Club Ranch Golf Course in Standish, which she and Don operated for 20 years.

After receiving her master’s degree in social work, Mary Ellen enjoyed working for Bay Psychological Associates since 1993. She also maintained a private practice in Standish. Mary Ellen was passionate about improving the lives of individuals and families through her work as well as volunteering for various organizations throughout her life. Ms. Roethke, as a cousin of the Pulitzer Prize poet Theodore Roethke, became the co-founder of the Friends of Theodore Roethke, purchasing his childhood home in Saginaw where people worldwide come to recite poetry in Theodore’s honor. Ms. Roethke was a co-leader for many years of the Rifle River Wranglers Horse Club. She bred and raised Arabian horses in Standish. Mary Ellen had a passion for gardening and travel, especially the Holy Land.

Mary Ellen is survived by the Honorable Ronald Bergeron; and her children, one son, Daniel “Dusty” (Jessica) Dudley, and one daughter, Danielle (Steve) Hollingsworth; and grandchildren, Aaron Mosciski and his children Elhana and Emmett, Taylor and her daughter Alora, Daytona Dudley and Holden and Adelaide Hollingsworth.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel with the Rev. Thomas McCoy officiating. Interment will be in Pine River Cemetery, Standish. Family will greet family and friends Monday, April 17, from 2-8 p.m. at the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home and from 11 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those considering an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Friends of Theodore Roethke.
