Medical marijuana meeting to gauge community’s feelings

MOFFATT TWP. — No decision as to whether a medical marijuana facility can operate in Moffatt Township will be made during or after an Aug. 5 meeting on the subject, but the board hopes to receive enough input in case the issue arises in the future.

Township Supervisor Dennis Spencer said the meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Moffatt Township Fire Hall, is being held because the township board has been approached by people interested in opening medical marijuana facilities. Spencer said three people have contacted the township about it, twice at meetings and once over the phone.

Since the township’s regular board meetings are not heavily attended, Spencer said the board felt having a special meeting about the issue would be beneficial.

“It’s kind of a public opinion poll so the board can get a feel for what the community thinks,” he said. “We don’t have a high attendance at our township board meetings, so we don’t have a good feel for what the community thinks.”

“It’s just a public comment forum,” Spencer said. “We’re going to give everybody a chance to speak for a couple of minutes and hear what they think we should do about this.”

Spencer said the state of Michigan revised the medical marijuana law last fall, clarifying several regulations, and that seems to be the reason more people are taking interest in opening new facilities. However, before a facility can legally operate, a local governing body has to adopt an ordinance, Spencer said.

“In order for anybody to even apply at the state level, there has to be a local ordinance for it,” he said. “If a community does not adopt an ordinance, nobody can apply, because that’s the first thing they’re going to look at.”

There are no major concerns about nonresidents of the township who may be advocating for or against dispensaries at the meeting, Spencer said.

“I’ll know if they’re residents or not, or property owners, and I can look it up after the fact, but I’m not worried about other people coming in to influence it,” he said. “I’m going to kind of take a straw poll as people speak. I’m going to put a checkmark in a column if they feel this way or they feel that way.”

Spencer said he has done a lot of research on the issue, both pros and cons, but right now he and the board just want to get the community’s thoughts on the topic.

“There are just so many things to look at, but the big thing is to find out whether our community would be for or against it,” he said.

Amazing how this Twp Board has only three people approach them about a Medical Marijuana Facility and they decide to have a public meeting about it. For years many Twp residents have approached the Moffatt Twp Board about important issues like blight, noise, garbage pick up, zoning, etc. Nothing ever done because the board didn't want to pass an ordinance or most likely does not have a clue how too. The Moffatt Board doesn't even have an attorney because they can't still decide. I guess a possible Weed Facilty is a priority though. Shameful.

For those who aren't aware of what is happening at your local level, be involved!!! If you can't attend the meetings, look at the minutes posted on the website, it's not up to date right now but you can see that this is a government entity that is doing their due diligence. Big kudos!!!
