Missing Sterling girl being reunited with her mother

TEXAS — A local woman is being reunited with her 16-year-old daughter after she had been missing for more than seven months.

Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre confirmed that Kristi Leonard of Sterling is being reunited with her daughter Kaitlyn, who had gone missing May 20, 2018. Kaitlyn was located by law enforcement agencies in Texas.

When Kaitlyn went missing, Kristi took to Facebook to silence rumors that would surface from time to time reporting her daughter had been found.

“Kaitlyn has **NOT** been found,” Kristi’s daily posts would read.

However, the negative turned positive as Kristi’s post Jan. 7 reflected a different message.

“Kaitlyn reached out to me today,” her post reads. “I'm beyond excited and can't even describe the happiness I feel in my heart right now. Kaitlyn is healthy and in good spirits. I'm forever grateful for every share, message and prayer. ‘Thank you’ just doesn't seem to be enough. I'm slowly getting to each and every message. I will continue to receive prayers as we start the healing process.”

McIntyre said he didn’t have much information on the cause of Kaitlyn’s disappearance that could be released at this time. His department had been coordinating with law enforcement agencies in Texas before Kaitlyn had been located.

Upon her return, McIntyre said his office will investigate further to determine if there will be any charges to follow.
