More teams competing in second WELL flag football tournament

STANDISH — Three more teams will take to the turf during the second WELL flag football tournament at the Standish-Sterling Central fieldhouse Jan. 13.

Weaving Effective Leadership and Life Skills Event Organizer Joan Tucker said this year’s tournament will feature seven teams. The games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The cost for spectators to attend is $1. Players paid $20 each to participate, Tucker said. Monies raised are used to provide WELL outreach events.

“We’re raising money to bring some resources to the area,” she said. “One of the things specifically we’re doing right now is a leadership seminar going on Jan. 12 at the WELL training center. It’s a well-known group. It’s called Fully Alive Leadership. We opened it up to leaders in the county.”

“Another thing we’re looking at is teaming up with the local bank to do some financial wellness training,” Tucker said.

Last year’s tournament was a hit, Tucker said. She said she and others at the WELL plan to have it annually.

“It went very well,” she said. “Everybody seemed to have fun. The fieldhouse was full of spectators. This will be a yearly event and we hope to grow it every year. If other businesses are interested in getting a team in they can contact myself or Steve Shoultes. He’s the main organizer of the brackets and all of that.”

Businesses can call Tucker or Shoultes at Vantage Plastics, at 989-846-1029. People coming to watch will have limited concession options and might want to bring a seat, Tucker said.

“There is limited seating so if you want to bring a lawn chair you can bring one, but in the fieldhouse there is limited seating,” she said.

This year’s teams include teams featuring employees from Vantage Plastics, one of which includes employees from CJ’s Sports Grill; a team representing Magline and Main Street Lanes; and teams representing Surveying Solutions Inc., Standish Milling, Globe Fire Sprinkler, Universal Roofing and Shoultes Tax & Consulting LLC.
