Norman E. Olney, 80, of Au Gres, formerly of Flushing, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018, at his home with his loving family by his side.

Norm was born April 1, 1937, in Flint to the late Virgil A. and Frances C. (Chopp) Olney. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-1959, obtaining the rank of sergeant. While he was serving our country, he married the former Carol Jean Pendell on Sept. 21, 1957, and together they raised three children, Jeffrey, Julie and Lynn. Norm was a supervisor for General Motors until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Au Gres. Norm was a master carver who could take a piece of wood and create a beautiful piece of art. He enjoyed the outdoors fishing and hunting and also enjoyed reading.

Norm is survived by his loving wife, Carol, of 60 years; children, Jeffrey (Michele) Olney, Julie (Paul) Dowell and Lynn (Roderick) Meads; grandchildren, Sara Olney, Danielle Wright, Erica Knudson, Leighann Egan, Victoria Moore, Michael Meads and Andrea Meads; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, Norm was preceded in death by brothers, James Olney and Johnny Olney; and son-in-law, Roderick Meads.

According to Norm’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Bedford Rd., Holly, MI 48442. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery at 2 p.m. prior to the ceremony beginning at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. Online condolences may be offered at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com.
