Plenty of prizes up for grabs at Sportsmen’s sucker tournament

STERLING — If a child participates in the Sterling Sportsmen’s Association’s annual sucker tournament, which was rescheduled for April 15, there is a good chance he or she will take home a prize of some sort.

Tournament organizer Kathy Switala said the top three in each age group — children aged 0-17 years old will be separated into age divisions — are guaranteed prizes, but typically simply signing up will lead to a prize.

“We give out quite a few prizes for the fish that are caught and all of the years we’ve been doing it, whether the club buys them or we get them donated, we’ve had enough prizes that every kid gets a prize, even if they don’t catch a fish,” she said.

Children with the heaviest fish will get the first pick of the prize bounty, Switala said. Most of the prizes promote outdoor activity of some sort, she said.

“We have quite a bit of fishing stuff, poles, tackle boxes, things like that,” she said. “We also have playground balls. We try to keep it as outdoors stuff for the kids.”

The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Switala said registration is held at the Sportsmen’s clubhouse before participants take to the Rifle River to fish.

“They come to the club and then they fish in the river around the club,” she said. “White’s Canoe Livery and Outdoor Adventures let us use their property and some of the residents on the river let us use their property too.”

“Usually around 1 p.m. we start weighing in and they have to be in by 2 p.m. to weigh their fish,” Switala said.

The event is held rain or shine, and lunch is served in the clubhouse after weigh-ins, Switala said. For more information, call 989-965-0111.

The Sterling Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse is located at 339 S. Melita Rd. in Sterling.
