Popular Celtic act to return to art center

STANDISH — Irish and Celtic music played by Equinox is scheduled to be featured at the Northeast Art Center in Standish March 11, a show held each year around St. Patrick’s Day that has become a hit in the area.

Northeast Michigan Arts Council Executive Director Gail Schmidt said the band has a certain appeal that draws a big crowd to the art center each year, typically around 110 people.

“I think people enjoy this group because they are energetic, talented and a lot of fun,” she said. “It takes people away from all the hustle and bustle of their daily lives wherein they can just sit back to relax and enjoy an afternoon of great music.”

The music is also loved by many, Schmidt said. However, Equinox’s performance is not simply easy on the ears. Once again, the band will be joined by the Auburn Glenn Dance Company of Bay City, creating an authentic Irish visual experience as well, Schmidt said.

“I think because the Celtic music is fast-paced and happy music, I think people just get caught up in it,” she said. “Then the dancers come out and I think everybody enjoys seeing that and hearing the music. You don’t hear it all yearround. It’s only this time of the year.”

Each band member plays multiple instruments, infusing additional cultures and styles into their sound, which has helped them gain a following over the years, Schmidt said.

“The group themselves have a following, so a lot of their fans come,” she said. “We have one couple that comes from Toledo every year. They follow the band wherever they go.”

Tickets go on sale the day of the show at 1:30 p.m. and can also be purchased in advance by contacting the art center at 989-846-9331. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $4 for students and $2 for children 12 and younger. For more information, call the aforementioned phone number or visit nemiac.org.

The art center is located at 3233 Grove Rd. in Standish.
