Proceeds from Motors & Mud to benefit fairgrounds improvements

STANDISH — Races and mud bogs at the Arenac County Fairgrounds Sept. 23-24 will help fund ongoing renovations and improvements at the grounds.

Fair board member Kim Karpinski said Motors & Mud, which includes lawn mower and go-kart races, a bump and run and mud bogs, will help pay for a new bathroom and shower facility. It will also help fund ongoing improvements to the kitchen and hall building, Karpinski said.

“We always have had just porta-potties, for one thing, but we’ve had a lot of inquiries for horse shows,” she said. “We could accommodate a lot more people if we had bathrooms. People have wanted to stay overnight. Of course when we have fair week, people camp there all week and it would be nice if we had showers instead of people having to run home.”

The two-day event will begin with lawn mower and go-kart races at noon Saturday, Sept. 23. A bump and run organized by TNT Demolition Derby will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free for the lawn mower and kart races, and the cost to attend the evening race is $8 per adult, $4 for children aged 6-12 and free for kids 5 and younger.

The mud bog is scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person, free for 5 and younger.

Karpinski said the fair board hopes improvements to the grounds continue beyond bathrooms and the kitchen.

“We have so many goals,” she said. “Of course we have to finish our kitchen and hall, but there are still improvements we need on that. But we could rent that hall out for showers and weddings. We do rent it out now for showers, but we need heat in there.”

“The grandstands, we’d love to see those replaced and a roof on it to keep people out of the elements,” Karpinski said.
