Public welcome to attend middle school Veterans Day ceremony

STANDISH — Community members can join Standish-Sterling Junior High students and local veterans for a Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 10 in the high school gymnasium at 9:30 a.m.

It will be the second time the event has been held, after the inaugural ceremony in 2016 went over well. Junior high counselor Tony Ott said dozens of local veterans participated in last year’s event, exceeding his expectations.

“We were kind of thinking maybe we would have 30-40 and we had right in the neighborhood of 70,” he said. “We were very happy to be overwhelmed by the number of veterans. It was fantastic. We are hoping to have the same situation this year.”

Ott said the ceremony was emotional for students, staff and veterans last year, especially the conclusion of the event, when veterans lined up throughout the gym and hallway and were greeted one-on-one by students.

“I remember watching the students go through and I also remember several veterans afterward saying never in their life did they receive that type of gratitude,” he said. “For some of them, it was the first time the received that type of recognition. It surprised everybody. It surprised the students. It surprised the staff by how well it went over.”

This year’s event is expected to be similar to last year’s with a few little changes, Ott said.

“We have a similar program as to what we had last year,” he said. “The students will still be introducing veterans to students and the staff. The band will be playing at it this year. Being at the high school gives us great access to the band. We’ll be talking about flag code and the story of Veterans Day and how it came about. It’s a similar layout to what we had last year.”

Students are encouraged to bring a veteran they know or are related to, but any local veterans are welcome to attend, Ott said.
