Relay for Life to return to SSC Elementary

STANDISH — Supporters, survivors and community members are invited to participate in this year’s Relay For Life April 12 at Standish-Sterling Central Elementary, to recognize the impact cancer can have on one’s life and raise funds to help mitigate those challenges.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. and go until midnight. It will have a superhero theme and will feature decorated tables and costumes, event coordinator Marcia Gillings said.

Gillings said last year’s Relay raised roughly $8,000 and helped fund not only research, but also daily aspects of dealing with cancer, such as the transportation of patients to and from appointments, and the making of wigs and hairpieces due to hair loss.

“Cancer has affected us all,” Gillings said. “Myself personally, I’ve had four members of my household be affected by cancer. One is no longer with us and the others are survivors. They work with it every day and wonder, ‘Why me?’ but it happens to everybody.”

She said she feels it’s important to have events like Relay For Life that support awareness and also provide a fun time for members of the community.

This year’s Relay For Life will include a variety of activities including a 50-50 drawing, bag auction, cornhole tournament and ring toss game, and attendees will be served Iva’s Chicken dinners, root beer floats and other snacks and beverages. Live music will be performed by Kelly Crainer at 7 p.m.

“It is a whole lot of fun stuff,” Gillings said.

The Luminaria ceremony will be held at 9 p.m.

The event is free to attend and is an opportunity for high school students looking for volunteer hours, Gillings said.
