Sale aims to spur community involvement

Posted

TURNER TWP. — A three-day yard, trunk and bake sale at the Turner Township Hall for township and area residents Aug. 10-12 will aim to get people out and about and active in their community.

Township Clerk Denise Gates said the township board decided to host the inaugural event to give township and area residents something fun to do locally.

“The township has been working on getting a little bit of community involvement going on,” she said. “I had run it by some residents who live out on the side roads, and they don’t get a lot of activity if they have a yard sale. I thought we’re right here on M-65. We have the extra parking lot and the main parking lot.”

Spaces are $5 apiece and approximately the size of two parking spaces, Gates said. Township residents as well as residents of the villages of Twining and Turner will get the first choice of spots, but if more spaces are available when the sale gets closer, Gates said they may be open to anyone.

“For whatever reason, if we don’t run out, I would open it up to anyone who wanted to set something up,” she said. “But I wanted to make sure the township residents get in if they wanted to.”

The response from vendors has been slow so far, but Gates said the board hopes for a decent turnout and plans to continue working on township events.

“We’re just getting our feet in the water to see what we can do to get some things rolling in the township,” she said.

Trunk and yard sale spaces will be in the township parking areas and the bake sale will be in the hall, Gates said.
