AGS students evacuated after alleged threat found on bathroom wall

Au GRES — Students were evacuated from Au Gres-Sims schools Monday, Oct. 16, after an alleged threat was found reportedly written on a bathroom wall.

According to a press release from AGS Superintendent Jeffrey Collier, school officials received information of the potential threat around noon and entered into what Collier called a soft lockdown, which led to an evacuation from school grounds.

“We take all threats to our students’ and faculty’s safety with utmost seriousness,” Collier said in the press release. “We worked in concert with multiple police authorities and Arenac County safety personnel to ensure that all safety protocols were followed.”

Students were evacuated to the St. Mark Catholic Church near the school. Parents were being allowed to pick students up as of 3:30 p.m., and the district reported via a phone call to parents that students who ride the bus would be bused home as usual.

The threat was deemed not to be credible after a full investigation by police, the press release states. The police investigation included a sweep by a dog trained to locate and identify explosive items. An ongoing investigation is planned, the press release states.

“I wish to thank local, county and state law enforcement agencies along with all Arenac County safety personnel for their immediate response and professional attention to school security,” Collier said.

AGS resumed school in full session Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The Arenac County Sheriff’s Department, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, Au Gres City Police, Michigan State Police and Au Gres-Sims-Whitney Fire Department responded to the incident.
