Summer Slam being held earlier this year

Au GRES — With organizers and regular players facing numerous scheduling conflicts, the Ashley Irwin Memorial Summer Slam is being held earlier this year, but coordinator Chelsie Bashaw said attendees can expect the same excitement as in past years.

The annual volleyball and horseshoe tournaments are scheduled for July 22 at the Au Gres City Park, with tentative start times of 8 a.m. Although the games can get competitive, Bashaw said the main rule is just to have fun.

“Our rules are more about coming to have fun and supporting the event,” she said. “It’s call your own rules. We talk about little things that are regular volleyball and horseshoe rules, but it’s more about having fun in memory of my sister.”

Bashaw’s sister, Ashley Irwin, was killed in a car accident in 2008. Proceeds from the Summer Slam go toward a scholarship established in Irwin’s name. Bashaw said she and other organizers did schedule a set registration deadline, but would take teams afterward as long as they register ahead of time.

“It’s one of those summer events that will have teams coming in late, and we’ll take them until the day before,” she said.

The cost to participate in either the volleyball or horseshoe tournament is $20 per person. Horseshoe teams are composed of two people and volleyball teams can have four or five players, Bashaw said. Winning teams receive gift certificates to local businesses, she said. Businesses in the area are very helpful with sponsorships and donations, Bashaw said.

“We have a handful of things to raffle off this year,” she said. “If we had a business that donated something, we’ll raffle it off.”
