Terry J. Schmidt

Died July 22, 2018

Terry J. Schmidt, 60, of Standish passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, at McLaren Bay Region, Bay City. Terry battled a lengthy but courageous fight with a 2011 diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia that was complicated further in early 2018 with an additional diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Terry was born in Bay City on April 28, 1958, the son of Sherman and Joy (Wilson) Schmidt. He married Sandra Lynn Arnold on Oct. 15, 1983, in Standish.

Terry graduated from Standish-Sterling Central High School in 1976 and earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Michigan Technological University. He was a life member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Standish.

Terry, along with wife Sandy and sons Josh (Hannah) and Kyle (Courtney), owned and operated TJ Schmidt & Company, a premier traveling carnival in Michigan. The midway was where Terry felt most at home, entertaining generations of festival and fair goers, although most of the time, if not at his desk, he preferred to be in charge of the behind-the-scenes operations. His legacy will be proudly carried on through his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Schmidt of Standish; two sons, Joshua and Hannah Schmidt of Ithaca and Kyle and Courtney Schmidt of Riverview, Fla. Josh and Hannah blessed Terry and Sandy with two beautiful granddaughters, Marley and Harper, who were the light of his life. He was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another precious granddaughter due in late August to Kyle and Courtney.

Terry was the oldest of four siblings who included sister, Nancy (Larry) Mardon of Standish; brother, Doug (Kathy) Schmidt of Standish; and sister, Peggy (Tony) Anderson of Standish. He is also survived by his father- and mother-in-law, Ivan and Agnes Arnold of Riverview, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Thomas Arnold of Riverview, Fla., and Jon and Karen Arnold of Riverview, Fla., as well as nephews, Adam Schmidt, Keith Schmidt, Ryan (Samantha) Schmidt, Cody Raquepaw, Jason Anderson and Alex Arnold; and nieces, Jackie Anderson, Lauren Arnold, Jillian Arnold and Heather (Bradley) Loper. He is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Terry was assisted by six of his dearest longtime friends serving as pallbearers, DJ Robinson, John Cardinal, John Ouillette, Douglas Burtch, Jerome Kusey and Andrew Goick.

The funeral services were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Standish on Thursday, July 26, 2018, with Pastor Matthew Dent officiating. Burial has taken place at Woodmere Cemetery, Standish.

The family was served through the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home in Pinconning, by Smith Family Funeral Homes of Elsie. Online condolences can be made at www.smithfamilyfuneralhomes.com.
